Who is in your ear?

So, I’ve got this cousin; every time she sees me, she is always encouraging me to write more. Post more. Every time, without fail.

I think why my cousin’s encouragement hits differently is because she is also a blogger/content creator, yet there is no weirdness, no subtle shade, and no competition. Quite simply, my cousin is running her own race and still cheering me on, and I love that for us. Which, to me, is very rare nowadays; many people are competing with others rather than just focusing on their own lane.

So it got me thinking and begs to raise a question. Who is in your ear? Who are you listening to? Everyone has a voice around them, but it’s not always neutral. While some people are genuinely encouraging you from the sidelines, some are hoping that you fail. They’re happy with you staying at the same place and not outgrowing them.

Consider whether you feel inspired when you leave the conversation, or do you feel weighed down, almost with a sense of regret that you even spoke to that person or persons? Not everyone needs to know what you’re doing. It is perfectly fine to move in silence. So, pay attention to how you feel after you leave a person’s presence. Take note.

The reality is, there is a cost to listening to the wrong people. Is it one that you can afford? This then leaves me to think about intentionality. We must be very intentional with our time, friendship circle, our conversations, and who we share ideas with. The sad, unfortunate truth is that not everyone around you wants to see you win. So be mindful. Be aware. Pay attention to the things said in jest.

So I ask again. Who is in your ear right now? Really sit down and give this serious thought, and be honest with yourself. Do they want you to succeed? Or are you met with subtle discouragement, shade masked as them “just being honest”? Take note

Until next time.

Peace and love!
